ENGLISH 10
Language Arts 10 is now a government examinable course. All students MUST write this exam. Students will complete one novel study, a poetry section, a short story section, a Shakespeare section, a midterm exam and a Writing Skills booklet. FRENCH 10
The French 10 class is currently offered on a project base system. There are 12 units covering many aspects of the French language and culture. INDEPENDENT STUDIES 10, 11, 12 (IDS)
Independent Directed Studies allows students to initiate their own learning under teacher supervision. Student must be prepared to invest a minimum of 120 hours of learning & instructing time. IDS allows two options: 1. The student may complete the required curriculum and pursue current curriculum in more detail to receive course credit plus IDS credit 2. The student may focus on one or more of the learning outcomes of a course that has not already been taken. The student receives an IDS credit only. The course must be based on the learning outcomes of a Ministry-Authorized or Board Authority grade 10, 11, or 12 course. Please contact the EBUS Academic Advisor for eligibility. FOUNDATIONS OF MATH & PRE-CALCULUS 10
(Replacing ‘old’ Principles of Math 10 course in September 2010) NO TEXTBOOK REQUIRED for this course. Course is presented in a series of video lessons, with students completing practice questions. Topics to be covered include metric and imperial measurement involving surface area and volume of 3D objects, trigonometry, factors and roots of whole numbers, irrational numbers, powers with integral and rational exponents, multiplying and factoring polynomial expressions, interpreting graphs, linear relations and functions, graphing, determining equations, function notation, and systems of equations. Students will submit worked questions and will complete online quizzes. Teacher is available to assist students via phone or online during regular office hours. This course is presented in a series of online lessons covering all required topics for this course. Students will: 1. View lessons 2. Complete and SELF-MARK questions related to the lesson 3. Complete and SELF-MARK a Practice Quiz at the end of each module. 4. Send to me a Submission page at the end of each completed module (worth 20% of your module mark). Teacher will provide ‘feedback’ on this work. 5. Complete the ONLINE MODULE QUIZ (worth 80% of your module mark) Since no textbooks are required for this course, enrolling students must: 1. Have access to a printer 2. Be prepared to spend approximately 20 hours a week on this course 3. Send work to me electronically ONLY * By scan/attach to email OR * By using a digital camera to take a photo of page(s) to be submitted and then attach to email. Students will receive a weekly progress report.
APPRENTICESHIP AND WORKPLACE MATHEMATICS 10
NO TEXTBOOK REQUIRED for this course. Course is presented in a series of video lessons, with students completing practice questions. Topics to be covered include metric and imperial measures, spatial reasoning, Pythagoras, similar polygons, trigonometry, properties of parallel/perpendicular/transversal lines, angles, solving proportions, currency, unit pricing, wages, gross and net pay, problem solving. Students will submit worked questions and will complete online quizzes. Teacher is available to assist students via phone or online during regular office hours
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10
This course continues to develop skills and build on concepts introduced in Grade 8 and 9. Students are expected to demonstrate their understanding of body systems, nutrition, healthy lifestyle and physical fitness concepts introduced in Grade 8 and 9.
PLANNING 10
Planning 10 is a required course for all grade 10 students. Although academic skills are important for a successful future, other skills are also needed. You need to plan for your career; you need to know what skills are valued by employers; and you need to be aware of issues affecting your personal health. Planning 10 covers these and other important areas of study.
SCIENCE 10
Science 10 consists of four modules: Sustaining Earth's Ecosystems, Chemical Reactions and Radioactivity, Motion, and Energy Transfer in Natural Systems. Students will be supplied with a textbook and workbook. The course work is based on chapter assessments, unit tests and labs and/or projects. Weekly v-classes occur with the teacher, which focus on specific areas related to the course. Science 10 is a provincially examinable course worth 20% of the student's overall grade.
SOCIAL STUDIES 10
Social Studies 10 continues the study of Canadian history during the period from 1812-1914, as well as looking at economic geography in B.C. and Canada. There is an emphasis on the opening of the Canadian West.
TEEN PATHWAYS 10
This course does not replace Planning 10. Where do you want to be in the future? Are you happy, successful, and fulfilled?
